This weekend we were meant to go sailing but our control room computer crashed at 1am on Saturday morning and that put paid to our sailing excursion (I could say thankfully coz’ the weather turned foul from Saturday afternoon onwards). Saturday morning was spent repairing and resetting up our system. After that rig moral we have decided to buy a second system as a backup so our control room can be reset within minutes! We are also installing a backup generator this month, leading to sms service whilst the power is out. Always good to upgrade!
We spent the weekend brainstorming about work, the yacht and the kid’s futures. Trying to strike that balance. We were able to find further ways of saving large amounts of money this weekend. Funny how I can preach to everyone how to save money but overlook basic principles in my own back yard!
I guess the lesson I learnt is that we need to be continually looking at how to save money. This saving, depositing our savings into our outstanding home loan accounts, will save us a lot of interest and in turn add cash towards our trip! Glad we spotted our error now rather than even later. Pity we did not spot it sooner!
That boost made us all the more excited that we will be able to leave on schedule if not sooner! We are currently drawing up an inventory of all our possessions and are starting to sell off the less used items. We will be keeping all the things we use daily but we agree that every week something must go! So, week before last was an outdoor heater we no longer use and last week was my textbooks from last year. We will be selling something again this week and all that money we get goes straight to savings – boat here we come!
We talked a lot about the high school decision and agree that the Home Schooling idea is probably the best taking into account our plans. We were both nervous to decide on the education thing coz’ we both feel it is important but in the end we have to think about the goal and home schooling is definitely towards that goal. Not to mention the savings towards the boat by choosing the home schooling route.
We discussed food, strange topic but one we have to look into considering we will be travelling around the world on a sailing boat. We decided we will start to move away from “box meals” or “packet meals” and rather cook from scratch. No more “cake in a box” or “lasagne mate”. Just old fashioned cooking and baking using raw ingredients. We figure raw ingredients will be more widely available not to mention the cost saving and the variety which can be achieved with fewer ingredients and less packing space. I will be adding a recipe page to the website detailing the various meals and baking goodies we experiment with and will use in future. So check them out and try them for yourself!
We came up with a few work ideas too, small changes that will make everything run smoother and things should function a little easier once we implement some of our new ideas.
Yes a great brainstorming session this weekend – great progress and great savings, not to mention better service delivery and happier clients! Seems this weekend was not a waste even if we didn’t get to go on the water!
