Rauen's Birthday week

30 November

This week seemed to fly by. Rauen’s birthday was an overcast, rainy day so we spent the day watching movies and in the evening we had our neighbours from Mojombo over for cake and milktart.

On Wednesday we headed to town, and spent most of the day at the Gateway shopping centre where Barry suited up. We found a beautiful suit, a few shirts a tie and some shoes, bought a couple of clothing items for the kids for Christmas and had lunch.

On Thursday we went with Mojombo to the Lion Park. When we arrived there, there was a white Rhino near the entrance in the picnic area. It was only about 3m away and was the cutest thing ever. There was a trainer nearby who would knock the back of his legs to move him away from the vehicles when he got too close.

At this point I want to tell you a bit about the Natal Lion park, it is basically a large farm where they take in retired circus animals and give them a bit of freedom in their old age. They are not caged but have handlers that ensure they are safe within the farm. This gives you a game park experience with wild animals but they get very close and are not skittish as they are used to humans. We took the long 7km route around the farm and saw elephants, who approached the car for photographs and buck, who were actually wild and so were not comfortable posing.

At the end of the route there is a large caged off area where they keep the lions. Their handler opens the gate for you and you can drive drive through the caged area where they have about 12 lions. Most of these lions are male, having come from the circus, but they behave as a pack and were lazing under the shade of a tree. We stopped the car and took some pictures, they didn’t even seem to take note of us.

It was a great day where we managed to see 3 of the Big 5 up close and posing for photographs, not your average game park!

We then took a scenic drive around the Valley of a 1000 Hills. Got ourselves lost in Inanda location and finally took the highway back to Durban central so Mojombo could return their rental car.

Barry’s parents are driving down to Toti today so we should head out to visit them in the next couple of days. Our plans with the kids were also finalised this week, they will be coming to visit from the 10th to the 20th of December! Very exciting!
