Good Morning East London!

27th July

It is Saturday morning and for whatever reason it seems to be the day I just can’t manage to sleep late, not that the day of the week really matters in this lifestyle, but my body clock deems Saturday the early morning wake-up call where I get to rise before the sun and watch as it slowly comes over the horizon.

Today we are heading to the local flea market, just for interest sake, but we have no other definitive plans. I have spent some of the morning researching the various marketing techniques for book promotion but I will have to wait for the actual print copy before we can launch the various campaigns I have listed and started researching. This waiting game is probably the hardest part of the whole book writing, editing, publishing process. Once we have the copy in our hands we can move ahead but until then I am regularly adding ideas and marketing campaigns to our ever growing list…to make a living from writing is harder than it looks!

28th July

Yesterday we headed out to the Bluff Flea Market. I was not sure what to expect but having been to loads of markets before I thought I was prepared. This market however was exactly not the average market. No cheap Chinese imports for sale rather loads of 2nd hand household items, clothes and electrical and car spares. A market as I would have imagined before the commercialisation of Flea markets.

We spent an hour browsing through the various stalls, then decided to buy a bite to eat. Kyle chose a vetkoek and mince and Barry and I had boerewors rolls. We headed over to the seating area to munch when we unexpectedly bumped into some ex clients come friends from Joburg. We haven’t seen them in many years and this was the last place we expected to see them again…but there they were, seated having some lunch and a beer. So we spent the rest of a lazy Saturday catching up.

They have moved down here and stay a few blocks from the flea market area so if the weather holds we plan to head over to their place for a braai and some more casual conversation. This reminds me how small the world is and how you never know who you will meet where and when…the joy of travelling I suppose.

On a sadder note a friend of ours from yacht Spirit of Adventure in Richards Bay passed away on Friday, he leaves behind his wife and 3 daughters. We are very saddened by the news as he was still young and fit with a zest for life. It brings to the forefront of our minds that you should live everyday to the fullest and enjoy the small things as they may become the big things later on. To Janet we pray that God will carry you and your family in this time and keep the memories of Jaco close to your hearts.

2 August

We woke up on Monday to a barometer reading of 1025. Now this doesn’t sound like anything to most to people but to anyone who has sailed the South African coastline, the wild coast in particular this number appears magical. Why? Well the rule of thumb along the wild coast is that if the barometer hits 1020, make a dash from Durban along the wild coast as the weather will most likely hold for the duration of your trip. I did a double check on the weather sites the whole way down the coast and viola…the weather opened like magic!

We had successfully repaired the port motor the week before, we were collecting Rauen at the airport on Monday…why were we waiting?

Barry and I had a quick discussion that went something like….

Lola: “There is a weather window from Wednesday to get to East London.”

Barry: “ So should we go?”

Lola: “ I don’t know, do you want to go?”

Barry: “ I don’t know, why are we here?”

Lola: “ Well, we have a wedding in Moz in Oct, and my sister is holidaying here at the end of August, and …”

Barry: “So, no valid reason then?”

Lola: “ Not really…”

We promptly left the discussion and headed to the airport to fetch Rauen.

Getting Rauen back on a flight was more complicated than usual.

I got the first frantic phone call: Mom they need your credit card here in Joburg to confirm the flight was paid for with your ID Book. What kind of a stupid system is that, I normally drop Rauen at the airport where we are and my credit card gets confirmed at the check-in desk, then I make sure it will work for the return flight. But since he travelled to Joburg by bus this time, I had not confirmed my credit card. So I took a photo of my ID and Credit card, all while driving towards the airport, which happens to be at least an hours drive in traffic free conditions. I MMSed it to Rauen to show at the check-in counter. That did the trick. Just before boarding time I called to make sure he was getting on board to hear a frantic voice, ‘ They won’t let me carry-on my skateboard. Back at the check-in counter, trying to check it as baggage now. I’m running cause the flight is already boarding.” So I hung up the call quickly. When he arrived…Rauen was fuming…I could almost see the smoke rising from his ears…his skateboard was lost. So we went to Mango baggage counter and there is was…in shining lights…his beloved skateboard!

Once home we looked at each other again…”Are we going?” and started preparing the boat.

Tuesday morning we filed a flight plan and Wednesday morning 8am we dropped the lines. Yip, that’s how we roll, no plans…just action.

Things went off without a hitch and we headed for the harbour mouth. We got clearance to leave and headed out towards the 200m depth contour hoping to find the current. It was slow progress at first and after 4 hours the wind filed in and the waves picked up a bit making a bouncy ride. Barry and I looked at each other and asked if we should just go back and give this whole thing a miss. The disappointed look on Rauen’s face made us stick to the original plan and we continued on our merry way. We were making slow progress and expected to only reach East London by Friday night at the speed for the first 5 hours. Then after dark we hit the current and started flying, registering a maximum of 9.9 knots meaning 5 knots of current! Wow hectic stuff, although strangely in the current the speed is not uncomfortable.

I was feeling seasick and started talking to George, which continued throughout the night, I was wishing we had turned around as sea sick is a terrible thing! But Barry stayed up all night with me up for an hour then an hour or so sleep and up again. Barry said he would sleep the next morning when Rauen and I could stand watch.

The night sky was absolutely amazing though, not a hundred stars or even a million but a hundred million, we could clearly see the milky way and words cannot describe how stunning the night sky is. The phosphoresce in the water was also fantastical.

Thursday morning sunrise was beautiful and Barry tried to sleep on the saloon floor, he managed about 4 hours of on-off sleep before giving up and getting back up. Before he went to bed we were down to 5.5 knots, but by the time he got back up we were screaming along at 8 knots making good time again. We decided to hoist some sail and get a bit more speed and managed a respectable 9 knots for the afternoon.

Barry and Rauen went up to the foredeck to get a few diesel containers and fill the diesel on route and found a flying fish, he was already dead so we just threw him off, but we caught our first flying fish!

Barry threw in his rod for the afternoon with no success and we were nearing the harbour when dark fell, still screaming along at over 8 knots we pulled in the sails to try slow down, to no avail and even dropped the motor to idle but still managed just under 6 knots with the current pushing us onwards to the port. Changing course was uncomfortable so we pointed our nose to the harbour mouth and hoped our charts were accurate enough to get us in.

We finally lost the current about 7 miles out of the mouth and just motored on in, to tie up and get some much needed sleep. Now with a bit of sleep behind us, something in our stomachs, I didn’t eat most of the trip, although Rauen and I managed to cook some pies and make some sandwiches, we will be heading off looking for the showers and then it’s exploring galore.

Moving to land and back aboard again!

8th July

On Friday evening Kim called and asked if we could house sit for her while they are away. Having nothing better to do we readily agreed and moved into her place in Durban North on Saturday. It has been a hectic time since then, Keagan has had 3 friends over, Kirsten and Brad came down for a few nights from Richards Bay and Keanu came down from Joburg.

Today, the last of the gang left but we are alone only until Wednesday when Nika gets here. Today I spent the day getting Barry’s Kindlebook ready, and it goes on sale tomorrow! Even with all this action Barry has not managed to feel cheerful about his book, for some reason he feels a little upset.

Barry's Book cover...mysterious
We also got an offer on our house which we put up for sale a few months ago as the rental has not been working out for us.

Tomorrow we are heading across to the Bluff to collect Kyle’s insoles and we are hoping to see our Neighbours on Maxscene on Wednesday as they are down in Durban for the Lipton cup and MSC week races.

Kyle with Dr B Starkey, The podiatrist
Wow a jam packed holiday and I am already feeling sad that Keagan has to leave this weekend to get back to school.

11 July

The last 2 days have been a whirlwind. Barry’s book went live in the Kindle store, we already have sales so thanks to those who have already ordered. Those who haven’t can do so now by clicking this link http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DTX9BLE. If you have read the book and would like to please place a review on Amazon!

We also went out sailing yesterday to watch the Lipton Cup. We were with friends from Richards Bay on Maxscene and had a fantastic day. Thanks Donna and Kevin for the outing and it was great to see Gus and Salome as well!

We collected Nika at the airport yesterday to stay with us until Saturday…yip, little time at home and more time out than usual also the whole day out on the ocean again was fantastic, even though all our teenagers slept like babies!

14th July

We move back aboard last night and I have to say, sitting here I can think of many conveniences I will miss:

1.       A Hot bath everyday!

2.       A real life toaster

3.       A warm cosy dry bed

4.       The simplicity of going out

5.       The endless supply of electricity

Oh well, the pleasures we get aboard will return like:

1.       …..

Oh who am I kidding, let me think about it and if I find 1 I will get back to you…

It’s not that bad though…or we wouldn’t be doing it!

Keagan Arrives!

19th June

Today we did provisioning on the boat. It sounds like something crazy and it really is a whole day event.

We left home early this morning and went into town with a list about as long as you can imagine. We headed for Pick ‘n Pay first where I swopped my points for cash so we did not have to pay for some of our large list…what a relief.

We did out shop there, then headed off to Oxford. Oxford is a great grocery store here in the Bluff where the food is cheaper than anywhere else. We took 2 more trolleys and loaded them up with supplies. Then we stopped at a liquor store for a bottle of Brandy for Barry and the wholesale cigarette shop.

Once we got back to the yacht club is was already after 12 but I had to first strip the cardboard boxes from the groceries so we spend a good 15 minutes removing the cardboard wrapping before we did the 22 trips from the car to the dinghy, then the 5 minute row across the water before offloading from the dinghy to the boat. Once all the groceries were in the cockpit of the boat I start the unloading process.

First I started with the frozen goods, making sure to keep them in the draw order I have arranged, then the fridge items. Next was the long life milk to under the seating area, the Cokes to under the counter and the cereals and tinned food to the cupboards in the starboard hull. Then the fun began. I opened the pastas and placed them in the airtight containers, next the sugar, rice, four etc was decanted into their various air tight storage containers. Keep in mind the containers only take between and 1 and 2kg each so it tends to be more than 1 container per packet of dry ingredient.

Once we had completed the task we threw away all the packaging and I got down to making lunch, some quick hotdogs as I was definitely not up to cooking a big meal!

The boys headed up to watch their TV program a little while ago and I have started working online a few minutes ago.

Provisioning day is always a long one!

22nd June

On Thursday we headed back to Toti to see Barry’s parents before they went home on Friday. We spent the day at the Thirsty Whale then went back to their apartment where we all had a bath, a luxury we take advantage of whenever we can, before heading home after sunset to get Rauen back in time for his chess tournament.

Yesterday we didn’t do much, just work a little on the computer as pushed to get further with the school curriculum before Keagan arrives tomorrow.

Today the weather has turned and we have overcast skies and howling winds…typical since we ran the motor last night to charge the batteries and now without sunshine we have drain them today!

Tomorrow we are picking Keagan up at the bus stop…we are all very excited, we haven’t seen him in ages!

29th June

Keagan arrived a few days ago, we fetched him from Durban Bus station. The station is almost a mini airport, with waiting areas for each coach liner and scales to weigh baggage. We had just arrived when his bus turned into the terminal, which was great as we ended up not paying the fortune they were asking for parking.

We headed back to the boat and chatted excitedly catching up on all the news.

On Monday Rauen and I did some school in the morning while Barry and Keagan went off to the bottle store and beach, Barry’s attempt at suntan sales was pointless as the beach was almost deserted. While they were on the beach I got a call back for a job interview.

We had a drink on Monday evening but were up early on Tuesday morning as I had an interview.

On Tuesday morning we headed over the Medicross clinic for Kyle. He has been having trouble with his feet and we finally got an appointment with the podiatrist there. He checked his feet and discovered he has a very low arch and has too much roll in his ankle joints. He needs special insoles so the doctor took a cast of his feet and now we have wait 2 weeks for this new shoes…almost like Forest Gump I guess.

We headed straight from there to the interview in Durban North. After the interview Barry decided to stop at “Some like it hot” his favourite Bunny Chow stop. We headed back to the boat and got home after dark. We had a few drinks and slept a bit late so ended up staying on board on Wednesday, the weather slowly deteriorated so we ended up playing Rummy on Wednesday evening…Barry won by more than 200 points as usual.

Thursday morning was wet and windy and we spent most it of on the boat. We ended up reading Barry’s novel to Keagan. We were half way through when it was time to head to land in the driving rain to take Rauen to the chess tournament.

I ended up losing my temper with an Indian guy who was very drunk, he came to the boat uninvited and completely drunk with boys. They go up to land before the chess so Rauen can shower and charge his phone, this guy came back with them, he got off the dinghy and onto the boat and instructed me to pour him a brandy. I obviously refused and immediately packed up and we all headed back to shore. Our uninvited drunk guest then proceeded to trip in the dinghy and damage our hosepipe fitting, at this point was temper was already simmering and I cursed out loud, only to be reprimand by the drunk unwanted guest saying I am rude and should not use vulgar language. Well that had me, I could hold my tongue no longer and explained in no uncertain terms that he is rude, drunk and useless. He is to stay away from my children and not intimidate them and never to ever speak to me again.

I then headed off to the car to get to chess. We got back, had a shower and waiting the few hours to go fetch Rauen again. While waiting for Rauen the weather deteriorated further and we ended up rowing back against the howling wind in pouring rain on a dinghy almost filled with water. We got back wet and cold so decided to have coffee, I continued reading and we drank more coffee and ended up completing the novel and only going to bed at 4am.

On Friday morning we had an appointment with a graphic designer, again in Durban North, La Lucia.
The effect of the Supermoon on the harbour!
We headed off to the coffee shop for the meet, then spent an hour playing in the park across from the mall, they had some really artistic swing design and monkey bars. Whilst playing we decided to head over to the Durban Boat Show, Friday would be less hectic than Saturday and we wanted to see anyway.

The boat show itself was a little disappointing, not much to see, but the boys enjoyed the hot bodies of the Honda promotion girls and we spotted a few boat friends, Norman, Chrisie and Ully and Vanessa all from Richards Bay, so was pleasant to meet up with old friends we haven’t seen in ages anyway.

This morning we headed to town for Keagan, as a rule we NEVER EVER go to town on a Saturday, let alone the Saturday at the end of the month and I was reminded why. Had Keagan not needed cigarettes we would not have gone today either.

You may ask why we never head out on a Saturday, well, the traffic is maddening, you use more fuel looking for a parking than you would driving there and back on a weekday, you end up parking 5km away, then spend hours standing in queues to spend your own money, why would anyone ever do that? Nope, I love heading off to town on a weekday. Even if I end up working, Barry will need to shop as I have no intention of queuing to spend money!

Street Skating - Rauens' nr 1 Sport!

11th June

It has been cold the last 2 days, with a howling South Westerly wind, so it has been a case of stay indoors and wrap up. The best way to warm the inside of the boat is to have the oven on so it was baking time, I baked a bread, I baked some boerewors packages and I baked a cake…How well did this bread come out?
Home baked bread

Boerewors/sausage packages

12th June

I woke up this morning before the sun rose, I spent a bit of time online checking emails…we got another rejection for Barry’s book, then prepared myself for the day.

First on my list of To –Do items was to teach some QuantitativeChemistry, this may sound like a really bad way to start the day but it is actually fun. Quantitative Chemistry involves a few calculations involving moles, mass and molar mass…all calculated from the Periodic table of elements…or as I call it the crib sheet. Rauen and I managed to get through the whole chapter in a few hours and he headed down to his room to do the written part of the work. This written part helps settle it in his mind, he summarises the theory and does a few practise examples, asking for help where he needs it.

Now Barry and I are getting ready to head off to a site meeting for a friend, Barry is wearing jeans for the first time in about a year and I forgot how hot is ass looks…Maria eat your heart out!

14th June

This weekend we are planning no hitting the beaches with our suntan lotion. We are heading down to Amamzimtoti as Barry’s parents are coming down for the week so we will hit the beaches to the South from here.

We have already managed to sell a couple of bottles to people we met or spoke to the last few days and are hoping the beaches will rake in a few sales too.

Barry is once again hard at work on boat repairs and maintenance, I don’t know where he gets the energy, but I guess it’s the same as me getting up each morning and teaching…

 16th June

We came down to Toti yesterday and only plan to leave tomorrow morning, Barry has spent some time on the beach here and has managed to sell a few bottle of suntan lotion. Today we took a walk up to Spur for their special breakfast, being Father’s day and all.

After breakfast we decided to take a walk through the beach front and up to Checkers to buy a hair brush for our niece Chante. I did the paparazzi thing today and took snap shot and short video clips along the way, the sights were awesome, the sandcastle display was magical, the street art was treat to watch and the videos I took of Rauen’s skate boarding skill was phenomenal!

Check out the You tube video of Rauen on his board skating on the streets of Toti and the wonderful sights we saw on and along the beach front!

What an amazing day!
